About BTP

Belle Tier Press is founded on two basic principles. The first, and perhaps most important, is a desire for unfiltered self-expression. After spending some time writing, and quite a bit more time being rejected, it became apparent that I ran the risk of compromising what I wanted to say and how I wanted to say it merely for the sake of publication. This is not something I intend to do. Though constant rejection is not an indication of a game run on suspect rules, constant rejection does eventually come to the conclusion that what I want is not necessarily what others want. And so here we have Belle Tier Press, a company created solely for my little ego, and solely so that I might distribute who I am, and what I have to say, in the manner I find most fitting.

The second principle upon which Belle Tier Press rests relates to the first. Books, especially those sold by traditional publishers, are expensive, almost prohibitively so. A quick look through the bookstore and you see a new fiction hardback sells for close to $30. Why so expensive? To answer, we must find out to whom this money goes. Certainly not the author, who is often given less than 10% (though with the current price of books, this still might be too much when compared to what the reader receives). With a quick bit of research, we learn most goes to the middle men, the marketers, the editors, the pitchmen, the social media experts, the executives, some of whom add value, some of whom only pretend. As an avid consumer of books, I do not consider this fair.  Access to the best of humanity (by this I mean anything considered play: painting, music, theatre, etc.) should not come with such a hefty price tag and filtered through the greedy fingers of businessmen.

And so $30 is not something I can do. My business model is simple. I want to sell my work for as low of a price as I can. The paperback of Cornelia Avila will be sold for a dollar or two above cost. The e-book will be priced similarly. A small amount I will keep for myself, so that I might have more time to do what I love. The rest will go to causes I believe in. These will not be political in nature, other than to fight for what I consider basic decency to each other and to our planet. As you have the ability to help, so you must.

On a final note, I would like to thank you for visiting my site and considering my work. I’ve spent a great amount of time working on Cornelia Avila and am proud to share it. I hope you enjoy.
